The Labour-led City Council has worked with partners to secure £220k of additional funding to support flood prevention in areas of Milton Keynes.
£150,000 of funding, allocated as part of the wider flood prevention strategy, will support flood alleviation measures in the village of Lavendon. This critical funding will enable the City Council to continue its ongoing work in ensuring residents are better protected from extreme weather.
Stony Stratford has been allocated £50,000 to support a flood alleviation study, which will assess the causes and potential solutions to flooding, helping to develop a long-term strategy for protecting homes, businesses and infrastructure.
£20k is also set to be allocated to support Newport Pagnell with surface water flooding.
The final allocations still need to be approved by the EA in early March.
Cllr Akash Nayee, Labour Cabinet Member for Public Realm said:
“It is very good news that in having a clear plan to deal with flooding issues being caused by increased wet weather caused by climate change, MK City Council has been able to secure £220,000 in new Labour government funding to help our local communities mitigate flooding. ”
Cllr Debbie Whitworth, Labour Councillor for Olney Ward said:
“It is fantastic news that by working properly with our partners that we have been able to secure £150,000 for Lavendon to help fund flood prevention measures. I will now be writing to the parish council and working with Milton Keynes City Council, asking them to work to establish a Flood Resilience Forum to access the funding and for swift action as quickly as possible, to ensure plans are in place if a flooding incident happens again. I’ll also carry on working with MKCC officers and the Environment Agency as they assess the case any larger flood defence schemes.”
Chris Curtis, Member of Parliament for MK North said:
"I am pleased that, after I raised this issue with the government, we have secured £220,000 from the additional flooding support. This funding will help protect Stony Stratford, Lavendon, and Newport Pagnell. I will continue working to ensure further investment in tackling this increasingly urgent issue."
