Milton Keynes Labour Group have chosen Cllr Lauren Townsend as the new Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes City Council after the former Deputy Leader, Emily Darlington, was elected as a Member of Parliament last week.
Lauren was the unanimous choice of the Labour Group.
Cllr Townsend represents Bletchley West ward on Milton Keynes City Council and has been a councillor since 2019. She is cabinet member for Resources and Customer Experience on the Labour council’s executive.
Former Deputy Leader Darlington was elected as Member of Parliament for the new MK Central seat at the General Election last week. She will be joined in Westminster by Chris Curtis MP, MK North, and Callum Anderson MP, Buckingham & Bletchley, as Labour won all three parliamentary seats in Milton Keynes while Labour won a landslide nationally.
Cllr Darlington will be replaced in the MK City Council Cabinet by Cllr Amber McQuillan who represents the Woughton and Fishermead ward.

“Lauren is an amazing councillor and over the past few years has excelled as a cabinet member. She will no doubt bring her enthusiasm and drive to make Milton Keynes a better place to live to the role of Deputy Leader.”
Cllr Lauren Townsend, Deputy Leader of MK City Council said:
“It is a great honour to have been elected by the MK Labour Group to serve as Deputy Leader. After 14 years of Conservative failure, we now have a Labour Council and three Labour MPs and our focus will be on delivering change people can see across all the communities of MK.”
Cllr Marland concluded:
“I would like to thank Emily Darlington for all the work she has done on the council. She will rightly be proud of what she has achieved in local government as her journey begins fighting for MK on the national stage.”
Cllr Darlington will continue to serve as ward councillor for Bletchley East for a short period.
