Lib Dem councillors on Milton Keynes City Council have collected dozens of unused Christmas trees to help those in need this winter.
Earlier this month, the Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats appealed to households across the city to donate any pre-loved Christmas trees so they could be given to families in need.
With Christmas fast approaching, Councillor Paul Trendall has been collecting Christmas trees and delivering them to local residents and families who may not otherwise have had one.
Recognising that the festive period can cause financial strain for households across the city, the new initiative helps residents struggling to make the festive season special this year.
Councillor Trendall, said:
“We know Christmas can be a difficult time for those struggling to make ends meet, and something as simple as a Christmas tree can make a huge difference for those in need. We wanted to do something practical to brighten people’s homes and to bring some festive joy. Thank you to all the residents who have helped with donations, it’s fantastic to see people coming together to support our communities.”
The donated trees have also been shared with Harben House Hotel in Newport Pagnell which is being used by the City Council as short-term temporary accommodation to house homeless residents.
Lib Dem Leader, Councillor Jane Carr, who represents Newport Pagnell South, added:
“Harben House offers support and a sense of security to homeless residents in Milton Keynes, and we believe it’s important for everyone to celebrate Christmas no matter their circumstances. By reusing Christmas trees, we’re bringing some Christmas spirit to those in temporary accommodation this year, whilst being kinder to the planet.”
Earlier this year, the City Council signed a contract to use all 140 rooms at Harben House to house single households, childless couples, or households of one adult and one child.
